DHFF 2019: Trick or Treating with “My Friend Josh”

Every day through October, the Department of Tangents brings you the Daily Horror Film Fest – one short horror film for every day of the month. It might be terrifying, it might be funny. It could be an homage classic monsters or something entirely new. Check back every morning for a new scare as we celebrate horror shorts!

I played the Angel of Death at a haunted hayride once just outside of Buffalo. It was my job to work the line and try to entertain the families while they were waiting for the tractor. I wore a giant, fearsome-looking foam head, and had to look through some black mesh in the neck that hid my face. The whole getup was covered by a dark flowing robe that sometime felt like a sail when the winds kicked up. In the dark, my scythe didn’t look like the cheap plastic it was, and I had bony rubber skeleton gloves to match the size of the head. Overall, it was an imposing look.

And I don’t think a single kid under the age of ten felt even a second of fear looking at me. Including the son of a certain future NFL Hall of Fame Buffalo Bill, who talked smack the whole time he was waiting. And if Japanese horror movies have taught us anything, it’s that Death is no match for a girl with a sense of purpose.

So I bring you the feel-good selection of the month, “My Friend Josh,” directed by Shaun Springer. It’s about a girl with no one to trick or treat with on Halloween night. And because she could not stop for death, she grabbed him by the wrist and yanked him along with her.
