The Feelies are celebrating their 40th anniversary this year with the release of In Between, their sixth album, on February 24 (look for a review in the New Release Roundup) Somewhere in Haledon, New Jersey in 1977, Glenn Mercer, Bill Million, Dave Weckerman, Keith Clayton, and Vinnie DeNuzio emerged from a band called The Outkids to become The Feelies. The lineup has changed only slightly since the band’s inception, and has been unchanged since around 1983. Mercer, Million, and Weckerman remain, with longtime members Stan Demeski and Brenda Sauter. Mercer still lives in Haledon, and that’s where the band recorded much of In Between. I got the chance to speak with songwriter/singer/guitarist Mercer on the phone about how the album came together and a bit of his musical history.
