DHFF 2019: The Return of “Momo”

Every day through October, the Department of Tangents brings you the Daily Horror Film Fest – one short horror film for every day of the month. It might be terrifying, it might be funny. It could be an homage classic monsters or something entirely new. Check back every morning for a new scare as we celebrate horror shorts!

Remember last summer when Momo was the scourge of your local news coverage? She was supposed to be sending kids disturbing photographs and convincing them to self-harm for the sake of the “Momo challenge,” which turned out to be a load of bunk. The terrifying image of Momo turned out to be a cropped photo of a bird woman created by a Japanese artist named Keisuke Aiso for display in a gallery. Because the Web is a silly place, it took the image and eventually churned out the urban legend. You can find out more about it on KnowYourMeme.com.

But what if Momo weren’t an urban legend? What if she just showed up in your shower one day and wanted to murder you? That’s the gist of this short written, directed, and edited by Alexander Henderson (although a separate writing credit also lists Tony Savero). There are a few by-the-numbers jump scares here, but also some genuinely creepy moments. I thought the Momo mask looked kind of rough – until she blinked.

Also, have we established a trope yet wherein any time a man tells a woman to “calm down” in a horror film, things tend to go very badly for him shortly thereafter? A possible trend of which I need to start taking note.
