New Release Roundup: Bob Mould, American Psycho Original London Cast Recording

Music
1. Bob Mould Patch the Sky
The former Husker Du and Sugar leader plays a guitar like a beautiful buzzsaw, and he promises this is his darkest and catchiest album yet, which is saying something. “I always aim for the perfect balance of bright melodies and dark stories,” he says on the Merge site. “I’ve used this juxtaposition for years. This time, I’ve tuned it to high contrast.”

Music and Horror
1. Duncan Sheik American Psycho: Original London Cast Recording
Duncan Sheik had great success with Spring Awakening, a rock and roll musical based on the 19th century German play. This time, his inspiration is a bit more modern, taking on the 1991 Bret Easton Ellis novel, which was also made into a movie. For the London cast, Doctor Who’s Matt Smith plays the titular psycho killer. Previews for the Broadway version opened yesterday. Sheik played a couple of songs from the project last November at his show in Zankel Hall (within Carnegie Hall), including a love song? Interesting.

If you’re curious about the Broadway edition, here’s a sneak peek at Benjamin Walker, who plays the lead role of Patrick Bateman, in a video for “Selling Out.”
