There were two surprise song previews Tuesday \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/shovelsandrope.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Shovels &#038; Rope<\/a> premiered \u201cI Know\u201d from their October 7 release <em>Little Seeds<\/em> on the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/speakeasy\/2016\/06\/21\/shovels-and-rope-little-seeds-album-i-know\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wall Street Journal\u2019s Speakeasy blog<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drivebytruckers.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Drive-By Truckers<\/a> shared \u201cSurrender Under Protest\u201d from their September 30 release <em>American Band<\/em> on <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/drivebytruckers\" target=\"_blank\">SoundCloud<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/0cSpDKu8gANzeUs90nQqPF\" target=\"_blank\">Spotify<\/a>.   <\/p>\n<p>The new Shovels &#038; Rope is a playful rocker, and a bit of a throwdown between rivals, musical and otherwise. \u201cI know exactly where you got that sound,\u201d sing Cary Ann Hearts and Michael Trent in their trademark rough and tumble harmonies, \u201cSee I was at the same shows you used to hang around.\u201d After that, they make an amusing parallel to a kind of high-school locker skirmish, singing, \u201cI know exactly how you feel right now\/You\u2019re hiding in the locker \u2018cause somebody took your towel.\u201d There was a time they\u2019d try to help you out. Apparently, that time has passed. <\/p>\n<p>Shovels &#038; Rope \u2013 \u201cI Know\u201d<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VSzdXjwHACo\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>American Band<\/em> looks like it\u2019s going to be a tough, political album. The Truckers have already raised their flag \u2013 literally on the cover \u2013 declaring the album to be \u201cprotest music fit for the stadiums, designed to raise issues and ire as the nation careens towards its most momentous election in a generation,\u201d and that they are eschewing subtext and symbolism for a straight-ahead approach to their \u201canger, discontent, and frustration with societal disintegration and the urban\/rural divide that has partitioned the country for close to a half-century.\u201d In this new song, Mike Cooley calls for an end to six generations of slavishly following a hurtful tradition for its own sake, asking those who might cling to flying the Confederate battle flag to \u201csurrender under protest if you must.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Drive-By Truckers \u2013 \u201cSurrender Under Protest\u201d<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"450\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/268050211&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=false&amp;show_comments=true&amp;show_user=true&amp;show_reposts=false&amp;visual=true\"><\/iframe>  <\/p>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More reasons why 2016 is a great year for music.
