He\u2019s a sharp writer (his day job is on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver) and this is a fine introduction for the uninitiated, and a treat for those who already know him. Preview \u201cSurprise\u201d on his BandCamp site.<br \/>\n<iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=3865400276\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless><a href=\"http:\/\/rooftopcomedy.bandcamp.com\/album\/physical-whisper\">Physical Whisper by Josh Gondelman<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reformedwhores.com\/\">Reformed Whores<\/a> <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B01C8QX2RQ?ie=UTF8&#038;keywords=reformed%20whores&#038;qid=1458279671&#038;ref_=sr_1_2&#038;sr=8-2\">Don\u2019t Beat Around the Bush<\/a><\/em><br \/>\nHead <a href=\"http:\/\/www.primusville.com\/\">Primus<\/a> oddball <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lesclaypool.com\/news\/\">Les Claypool<\/a> loves the Reformed Whores. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonian.com\/2015\/11\/05\/reformed-whores-respond-to-redskins-thanks-for-the-free-publicity\/\">People who enjoy the name &#8220;Washington Redskins,&#8221; not so much.<\/a>  This is what Colonel Les had to say: \u201cCloaked in a veil of beauty, innocence, and country twang, the gals have created an album of material that could make Charles Bukowski blush.&#8221;  If you like country and double entendres (okay, some of them are single entendres), check out album.<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FAd69w_ADms\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>MUSIC <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>1.<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.grantleephillips.com\/\">Grant-Lee Phillips<\/a> <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/The-Narrows-Grant-Lee-Phillips\/dp\/B018STFGQ2\">The Narrows<\/a> <\/em><br \/>\nAt my first opportunity tonight, I will be at my local record store (they still exist!) picking this up. Phillips has been a favorite since his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.grantleebuffalo.com\/\">Grant Lee Buffalo<\/a> days. \u201cSmoke and Sparks\u201d is a good example of why. He\u2019s an evocative lyricist with a rich voice. There is beauty and wonder here.<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4hFEas-gVWo\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/iggypop.com\/\">Iggy Pop<\/a> <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s\/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias=popular&#038;field-keywords=Iggy+Pop+Post+Pop+Depression+deluxe\">Post Pop Depression<\/a><\/em><br \/>\nIt\u2019s Iggy Pop. You\u2019ll get it or you won\u2019t. But it might interest you to know that Josh Homme of <a href=\"http:\/\/qotsa.com\/\">Queens of the Stone Age<\/a> produced it, and it was recorded at his studio with QOTSA\u2019s Dean Fertita on keys and guitar and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arcticmonkeys.com\/\">Arctic Monkeys<\/a>\u2019 Matt Helders on drums. From the sound of the sampler, they did good work together.<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sx8Dj5Fw6f8\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/davecobbproducer.com\/\">Dave Cobb<\/a> <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Southern-Family\/dp\/B019MWU5OW\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&#038;qid=1458280082&#038;sr=8-1&#038;keywords=dave+cobb\">Southern Family<\/a><\/em><br \/>\nDave Cobb had an amazing 2015, producing two Grammy-winning albums in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chrisstapleton.com\/\">Chris Stapleton<\/a>\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Traveller-Chris-Stapleton\/dp\/B00SWBLS3C\/ref=pd_bxgy_15_img_3?ie=UTF8&#038;refRID=0WF46X22TSGFK8X95ND2\">Traveller<\/a><\/em> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonisbell.com\/\">Jason Isbell<\/a>\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Something-More-Than-Jason-Isbell\/dp\/B00WSOWR0M\/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&#038;ie=UTF8&#038;qid=1458280158&#038;sr=1-1&#038;keywords=jason+isbell+something+more+than+free\">Something More Than Free<\/a><\/em>. <em>Southern Family<\/em> is an impressive collection of songs that shows the breadth of Cobb\u2019s work, from Isbell and Stapleton to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shooterjennings.com\/\">Shooter Jennings<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mirandalambert.com\/\">Miranda Lambert<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zacbrownband.com\/\">Zac Brown<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/johnpaulwhite?lang=en\">John Paul White<\/a>. But it\u2019s not just a resume, it\u2019s a concept album in which some of the most talented songwriters and performers in contemporary country and Americana explore their roots. Here are a couple of samples. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/andersoneast.com\">Anderson East<\/a> \u201cLearning\u201d<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/P7ZldkVjC6o\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>John Paul White \u201cSimple Song\u201d<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XKW3ZdszZMs\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe> <\/p>\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/willyvlautin.com\">Richmond Fontaine<\/a>, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/richmondfontaine.bandcamp.com\/\">You Can&#8217;t Go Back If There&#8217;s Nothing To Go Back To<\/a><\/em><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/willyvlautin.com\">Willy Vlautin<\/a> is one of my favorite storytellers, as a musician with Richmond Fontaine and as a <a href=\"http:\/\/willyvlautin.com\/motel-life\/\">novelist<\/a>.
