It can be flat-out scary, funny horror, or maybe otherworldly, like today\u2019s selection, <em>A Tap At the Window<\/em>, written and directed by Jimmy Ren and Jack Vang. They work under the banner of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.glasspixelstudios.net\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Glass Pixels Studios<\/a>, and they\u2019re also responsible for <a href=\"http:\/\/nickzaino.com\/departmentoftangents\/2017\/10\/21\/daily-horror-film-fest-the-toothbrush\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Toothbrush<\/em><\/a>, one of my favorites from last year\u2019s DHFF. <\/p>\n<p>A knock at the door has been a terror trope for at least as long as W.W. Jacobs\u2019s short story \u201cThe Monkey\u2019s Paw\u201d in 1902. And probably a lot longer than that. This starts off with that same basic principle \u2013 something is tapping at the window of a woman\u2019s apartment, and at first, she doesn\u2019t know what it is. It won\u2019t reveal itself. And when it does, you wish it hadn\u2019t. <\/p>\n<p>Ren and Vang put a surreal twist on the haunted house (or in this case, apartment) story. Since it\u2019s a short, they know they don\u2019t have to explain everything, and a little mystery can be an effective tool. There might be a little Lovecraft in here, but that\u2019s left to your imagination. <\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re a filmmaker, Ren and Vang <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=D9Re1Ls3rVM\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">offer a detailed account of their filming experience in the description on their YouTube channel<\/a>, down to the specific cameras they used and the challenges they faced using a greenscreen in certain scenes.
